Popular view of culture is that it is a set of mandatory and valuable goods. Cultural norms are either emergent from the artifacts or established by the systems (for example legislation) . Others view culture as a set of tools were artifacts and values are a set of goods for a society. I tend to believe the latter, and in Catalonia I have found 3 aspects of culture that are used as tools to the society. Schein’s levels of culture includes artifacts, shared values and assumptions.
The food “artifacts” that are Catalan are often derived from the physical aspects of the land, and have been used as tools to create a cultural aspect. Calcots are long white onions that are harvested by mounding soil to cause the onions to grow upright. Catalans eat calcots in a social setting, most people go out to eat them. Eating calcots is a messy event, and is very fun to do because people eat the onions with their hands after dipping it in a certain calcot sauce. When eating calcots, it is often accompanied by wine in a perron. This object is used to pour the wine like a spout directly into your mouth, not using a cup.

Another aspect of catalan culture is the human towers. Human towers are a tool communities use to express their dependency and togetherness. Human towers are often supported by the whole community, even though only a few (9 or 10 people) are actually stacked up. This tool of culture is used to create community involvement and strong trust.
